ABOUT OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE

Open Source Software is computer software that has it's source code (think recipe) available for the public to view, edit and even redistribute without charge or restriction.

This is very different to the conventional model of commercial software from companies such as Microsoft, who keep their source code a tightly guarded secret and don't give anyone the freedom to modify or redistribute their software.

Open source software provides 3 main freedoms to it's users:

Freedom 1: The freedom to study and modify the program.

Freedom 2: The freedom to copy the program and give those copies to anyone you like.

Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program and release your improvements to the public.

These freedoms mean that any users of Amberdms's open source products are free to modify them as they see fit, or they can pay someone else to make changes on their behalf.

Instead of charging for the software purchase cost like traditional vendors, open source vendors typically provide commercial add on services such as support, hosting and customisation. Infact, we offer customisation services for all of Amberdms's products, after all who better to make the changes than the original developers?

At Amberdms we belive strongly in the open source development model, finding that it leads to an superior software product, prevents users data from being locked into proprietary formats and leads to contributions benefiting both Amberdms and the community.

Whilst open source means that our users could decide to take our software and go find someone else to run it for them, or not pay us anything, we're 100% satisfied with this. We like knowing that our customers choose to use Amberdms because we offer such excellent service and support, rather than being forced to.

PUBLIC SOURCE & TRACKERS

At Amberdms we don't just release open source software, we believe in developing in an open manner to allow users and developers to stay included in development decisions and progress.

In order to do this, we have all our open source projects publicly available with SVN and Indefero a combination wiki, issue/bug tracker and source viewer interface; along with our mailings lists to allow developers and user to talk to our team.
